Box Gutter Snow Load Testing: Let It Snow — We’re Ready

At Guttermaster, we understand the challenges UK buildings face in winter. Snow accumulation, freeze-thaw cycles and sliding ice place significant stress on gutter systems — particularly on exposed rooflines. That’s why we put our Box Gutter system through independent, extreme snow load testing by CERAM (now Lucideon).

The result? Our aluminium box gutters demonstrated outstanding performance — even under weights far exceeding realistic site conditions.

Tested for the Toughest Winter Conditions

Our box gutter profile (RG 150 x 100mm) was subjected to static and impact testing as part of a project to evaluate how aluminium systems handle severe snow and ice loads.

Static Load Failure: 891kg over 3 metres

This test showed the gutter system could sustain nearly 900kg before failure — simulating a load more than 19 times heavier than a fully ice-filled gutter. That’s an enormous margin of safety in real-world applications.

Dynamic Impact Load: 211.5 Nm

The test also simulated snow sliding off a pitched roof and hitting the gutter at speed. Impact loading reached 211.5Nm (equivalent to a 28.6kg snow mass dropped from 1m). While this caused deformation, the gutter retained structural integrity until the point of test termination.

Why Test Aluminium Guttering?

Snow and ice loads can occur suddenly and without warning. At Guttermaster, we go beyond standard performance claims — we independently validate our systems to ensure:

  • Structural integrity under static weight

  • Resistance to impact from falling ice and snow

  • Durability of brackets, fixings and gutter profiles

These tests are part of our broader product testing programme, which supports safe and compliant specification across the UK construction sector.

Choose Guttermaster for Winter-Ready Aluminium Guttering

If your project requires gutters for exposed environments — particularly flat roofs or parapet edges — our box guttering delivers proven strength under winter extremes.
