Aluminium Gutter Snow Load Testing: Impact-Proven Guttering Systems

At Guttermaster, we don’t just manufacture high-performance aluminium guttering — we prove its resilience through rigorous, independent testing. As part of our commitment to quality, we conducted extensive aluminium gutter snow load testing to assess how our systems respond to extreme weather conditions, particularly heavy snow and ice accumulation.

Why Snow Load Testing Is Essential

Severe winters can expose gutter systems to intense stresses, including snow build-up, ice formation, and sudden impact from sliding snow. To ensure our systems perform in real-world scenarios, Guttermaster commissioned snow load testing from two independent bodies — IDC and CERAM (Lucideon) — covering a full range of aluminium guttering profiles.

Independent Test Results: Static Load Performance

The testing programme assessed how each system performs under the gradual accumulation of snow and ice, simulating up to 1,000kg of loading in some cases.

IDC Test Highlights

  • Half Round Gutter (DG/140): Passed static loading of 500kg with no deformation or failure.

  • Serpentine Gutters:

    • SG/135: Endured 1,000kg with no visible deflection.

    • SG/175: Sustained 1,000kg without structural compromise.

  • Moulded Ogee Guttering:

    • MG/5×4 (bracketless): Withstood up to 700kg.

    • MG/5×4 (with brackets): Held a 250kg load with full integrity.

CERAM Test (Box Gutter System)

Testing on our Box Gutter profile RG 150x100mm showed failure only occurred at an extreme load of 891kg, well beyond typical site conditions.

Dynamic Impact Testing: Simulating Sliding Snow Loads

Our gutters were also tested for dynamic impact — mimicking snow or ice sliding off pitched roofs.

IDC Results

  • Serpentine SG/135: Withstood a 150kg impact with no structural damage.

  • Serpentine SG/175: Absorbed a 200kg dynamic load while maintaining full performance.

  • Moulded Ogee MG/5×4: Passed dynamic tests up to 150kg without any damage or deformation.

CERAM Results

The box gutter system endured dynamic impact testing up to 211.5 Nm (equivalent to a 28.6kg snow mass falling from 1 metre). Despite significant deformation at this threshold, it took extremely unrealistic conditions to render the system unserviceable — demonstrating outstanding resilience under harsh impacts.

Performance You Can Trust

Our aluminium gutter snow load testing confirms that Guttermaster’s systems meet — and often exceed — the most demanding environmental challenges. Whether you need elegant Half Round, contemporary Box, streamlined Serpentine Round or traditional Moulded Ogee profiles, you can count on robust performance and reliability.
