Aluminium – Polyester powder coating

Guttermaster is approved to provide polyester powder coated finishes offered by Axalta, Interpon D, IGP, Valspar and Tiger polyester powders.  Polyester powder coating is an ideal finish for external applications where UV stability and weather resistance are essential, we utilise external architectural grade polyester powders to achieve this.  It remains a popular choice with architects and specifiers due to the spectrum of durable finishes available.  The range of special finishes available has grown dramatically in recent years with textured, metallic and anodic finishes now readily available.  Powder Coating extends the life of the Aluminium as it is harder wearing than traditional painting or spraying with superior coverage being achieved in a single coat.

Powder coating is available with a lifetime guarantee.  Our polyester powder coating finishes are guaranteed to BS 6496:1984 and BS EN 12206-1:2004 for aluminium for up to 30 years or more depending on surrounding environmental conditions.  Environmentally – it is a solvent free, and any over sprayed product can be readily recycled.

The Process

The 3 phases of powder coating:

Phase 1: Pre-treatment – This is the most critical process to powder coating.  We use a seven stage pre-treatment which is vital for the finish to perform to its full potential.  Continuous monitoring of the chemicals involved avoids any risk of premature corrosion of the finish, flaking and/or chipping.

Phase 2: Coating – The pre-treated material is passed through fully automatic robotic spray booths to ensure an even coating.  As the powder passes through the spray gun using compressed air, the particles are charged and as a result they are attracted to the substrate.

Phase 3: Curing – The powder coated material is then passed through an oven, allowing the temperature to increase to 200°c at its peak. The powder then melts and flows evenly over the surface before hardening.

Once curing is complete the material is inspected for defects, paint thickness, colour and gloss level.

Aluminium – Anodised Finishes

Anodising is the process by which the natural film on aluminium is greatly increased in thickness.

Aluminium metal is on the anodic side of the galvanic series. Its position is similar to zinc and magnesium, ie it is readily oxidised. The oxide on aluminium is naturally corrosion-resistant, very hard, abrasion-resistant, an insulator and very tenacious. In its natural form, the oxide film on aluminium is less than 0.50 microns thick.

The Process

Anodising is a process of finishing on aluminium in which the visual appearance of the metal is changed to be aesthetically pleasing. This visual appearance must have colour stability and durability, particularly for exterior use.

The aluminium is anodised by the passing of an electrical current from the anode to the cathode. The item to be anodised becomes the anode part of the electrical circuit whilst the cathodes are already in the anodising tank. The electrical current causes oxygen to be released at the anode which combines with the aluminium to form the aluminium oxide which is the anodic film. The depth of the anodic film is determined by the time in the anodising tank, usually between 15 to 60 minutes which will create an anodic film thickness of between 5 and 25 microns.

The Advantages

Anodising is durable and will not flake, chip, or peel over time.

Anodising is easy to maintain.  You only need to do periodic cleaning of anodised extrusions with a mild detergent and water to restore the original lustre.

Ease of fabrication.  The marring usually incurred in the fabrication of painted extrusions is virtually non-existent with an anodised extrusion.  Other abrasive wear at installation, shipment, and handling is negligible.

Color sustainability, because the sealing process during anodising helps to keep your anodised finish looking factory new for years to come.

Aluminium – Pre-Coated

Our pre-painted aluminium sheets are coil-coated with a Class 1 PVdF flexible paint system.

PVdF has excellent weathering properties, colour-fastness and UV resistance and is the most commonly selected finish for construction, giving long life and a virtually unlimited range of colours.  All sheets have a UV resistant film with directional arrows applied to the painted surface to protect the pre-painted finish during fabrication and installation.

The Process

Coil coating is a continuous, automated process for coating metal before fabrication into end products. The steel or aluminum substrate is delivered in coil form from the rolling mills. The metal coil is positioned at the beginning of the coating line, and in one continuous process, the coil is unwound, pre-cleaned, pre-treated, pre-primed, and prepainted before being recoiled on the other end and packaged for shipment. All of this happens at up to 700 feet per minute!
